Our History

Steve and Judy Westergard began their flooring story in 1983 when a friend convinced them to buy a carpet franchise called Mr. Carpet. They had a small storage building to store their carpet and an old green station wagon full of carpet samples. Steve traveled from Pocatello to Ashton, Idaho, and everywhere in between, showing customers the samples.

By 1985, they opened a 3,500 square foot facility and within just two years, they moved into an even larger facility. Though almost double the original facility, they soon outgrew that location as well. In 1992, they purchased an old grocery store. Friends and family spent three months helping them convert it into the sustainable floor covering store, Mr. Carpet.

Shortly after that, Steve and Judy incorporated the company, and in 1995 joined Carpet One, the largest co-op of retail flooring in the nation. Mr. Carpet then became known as Carpet One Floor and Home of Idaho Falls. In 2007, they added a new retail area as well as additional warehouse space making the total facility 13,000 square feet. It is here at 405 W. 17th Street that the company remains today.

Carpet One Floor & Home of Idaho Falls has largely been a family business with sons and daughters, nieces and nephews, friends, and even grandchildren joining the team at different times along the way.

Although Steve passed away in 2018, Judy still owns the company. While some employees have retired over the years, the majority of the original team, including some family members, still remain at the store after 20-30 years. We are very proud to be a member of the Carpet One family as it provides us with national buying power, allowing us to pass along great savings on the best assortment of name brands in carpet, vinyl, LVT, WPC, waterproof laminates, hardwoods, and ceramic tile.
